The Mytraffic vehicle traffic is - like the pedestrian traffic - derived from the adjustment of raw data from a representative sample. This raw data is generated by Connected Vehicles.
We chose to rely on Connected Vehicle data rather than our mobile application data to build our Vehicle Flow insight because it allows us to maintain control over our panel of vehicles: there is no risk of tracking bicycles, scooters, or motorbikes.
A Connected Vehicle is a vehicle whose navigation system generates geolocation data during its journeys. Contrary to popular belief, these vehicles are extremely common. For example, any new Renault vehicle put on the road in 2012 or later is equipped with a R-Link navigation system, and therefore falls into this category.
In the collective representation, connected vehicles represent a much larger volume in urban areas than in rural areas. However, comparing Mytrafficʼs data geographical distribution and official statistics shows great geographical representativeness in our Connected Vehicle Data.
This distribution is homogeneous, thus showing that our data is voluminous and exploitable at the scale of the Mytraffic territories.
The automotive markets of the various European countries have extremely different compositions, the same manufacturer will have neither the same coverage nor the same category of users from one country to another. To guarantee the geographical and demographic representativeness of its connected vehicles data, Mytraffic develops for each European country a specific sample of tracked vehicles.
To do this, several criteria are used: market share of the various manufacturers on the national territory, models most marketed by these brands, and price of these vehicles ...
Thus, for each country, Mytraffic selects one or several suppliers and builds a panel of representative vehicles whose data can be reliably adjusted. As an example, we can source data from (depending on the country): Volkswagen, Renault, Toyota, Ford, Peugeot...
Overall, vehicles constructed less than 10 years ago stand for between 40% and 60% of vehicles on the road in Mytraffic countries. This significant penetration rate, combined with partnerships with the continent's leading manufacturers in 5 countries, provides our vehicle data with a meaningful representation.
